Have you ever wondered—where is the abyss? The Scriptures mention it, but what exactly is it, and why does it exist? This is not just a fairy tale or a story made up to spark fantasy. The abyss is real, and so was Satan’s rebellion.

After Satan and his angels rebelled, God cast them into the abyss. Satan once held a special place as a cherub, a guardian who shielded other angels from the consuming fire of God’s presence. Proud of the power God granted him—as the right hand of God—Satan believed he could withstand God’s fiery power and even rival God Himself. He accused God of being controlling and unyielding, claiming there was no freedom under God’s rule. But Satan only saw the surface of God’s true power; he did not grasp God’s omnipotence or the consuming fire that defines it.

When Satan and his angels dared to fight against God, God simply moved His finger, and the very ground beneath them gave way. They all fell into the abyss—a dark, empty void of utter desolation. It’s beyond human imagination how billions of them fell together; one third of the angels sided with Satan. For trillions of years, they have been bound in the abyss. While we don’t know all the details—God has only revealed parts of this through His prophets—the Scripture confirms the abyss is their prison.

Where exactly is this abyss? For trillions of years, Satan and his angels have drifted in a vast emptiness, a kind of limbo suspended in darkness. This abyss is the very world where we live. Before God created our world, it was empty and void—this same abyss. God’s Spirit came down to this place of darkness. At first, Satan and his angels did nothing while imprisoned there, but after God’s visitation, they witnessed His power firsthand.

According to Scripture, the empty, void abyss was illuminated when God said,

“Let there be light,”

and there was light. Over six days, God continued to create everything, from the earth and seas to the stars, moon, and sun, bringing beauty and life to the abyss. On the seventh day, God rested and blessed His creation, establishing the Sabbath.

Now you know: the abyss was transformed by God into a vibrant, living world—a place full of wonder and light. And Satan and his angels watched it all, seeing with their own eyes the incredible power of God.
